Vandenberg Hawks whip Cruz Azul 6-0
VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- Radoslaw Ciesielski scored an opening goal in Sunday's soccer match between Vandenberg Hawks Varsity Soccer Team and Cruz Azul where the base's representatives crushed their opponents in a 6-0 victory in a local Santa Maria Central City Soccer League.
Two other goals in a first half came from midfielder Chauncey Clark and striker Thom Pettigrew.
Hawks goalkeeper Joe Mowery earned his first shot out of the season.
"We played great soccer at moments where we controlled the tempo and managed to capitalize on scoring situations," said Joe Picariello, captain of the team and scorer of two additional goals. "But we still have to work on some aspects of the game"
Sunday's victory may have seemed like a "walk in a park" but there are more games to follow, and the local teams are looking forward to playing Vandenberg Hawks.
"This is a great way of showing the local community, our presence and involvement," said the team's manager, Banta York. "Everyone in the league knows that our team represents the Air Force in many ways and playing soccer is one of them."
"This was only our second game and we will get even better as the season progresses," Ciesielski said, who made the final goal a closer. "Practices throughout the week are definitely paying off as we are already a great collective--on and off the field."
The team practices every Tuesday and Thursday at 6 p.m. at the main field on base and competes in the league on Sundays.
