AFOSI liaison event returns to Vandenberg
VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- The Air Force Office of Special Investigations, Detachment 804, hosted its 4th Annual Liaison Event at the Rod and Gun Club here July 22.
About 70 officials from a variety of law enforcement agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Secret Service, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Internal Revenue Service, AFOSI, Santa Barbara County Sheriff and local police departments, participated in the annual competition at the Rod and Gun Club's firing range.
"This was a great opportunity for community building and networking," said Special Agent Nelson Roman, the AFOSI Detachment 804 superintendent. "Hosting the event here allows the participants to see the base and the things we do here."
The annual gathering at Vandenberg provides law enforcement officials with a forum to orientate and strengthen existing relationships with other local departments and agencies.
"This event creates an opportunity for people to establish, and build upon, professional relationships with others from different agencies in the law enforcement community," said Agent Roman. "For us, if something were to happen to a military member, all of these agencies are here to support us. So, building upon our relationships with these agencies is only going to help us accomplish our mission here at Vandenberg."
One of the day's competitions was a bowling pin shoot. The objective of the competition, for the competitors, was to race against the clock, and one another, to knock standard bowling pins clear off of a table in the shortest amount of time with a handgun (9 mm, .22, .4, .45 caliber). The pins were aligned in rows of five with three pins deep. Participants were allowed only 25 seconds to complete this task.
For the past three years, Vandenberg AFB has been the designated meeting ground for law enforcement liaison activities between Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties. Personnel with AFOSI Detachment 804 plan to carry on the tradition of the liaison event next year.
