The 30th Force Support Squadron is scheduled to host the annual Independence Day picnic here from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Cocheo Park July 2.

The free and family-friendly picnic, open to all persons with base access, will feature food, beverages, games, music and prizes.

"The 30th FSS wants to provide a fun and safe activity for Vandenberg families, to provide a well deserved rest after the hard work our Airmen do on a daily basis and to enhance the holiday for all of Team Vandenberg," said Dan Hayes, the 30th FSS Community Services Flight chief.

The event is at no cost to the picnic's attendees due to funds raised by the 30th FSS and the picnic's major sponsor United Services Automobile Association.

The picnic has been carefully orchestrated over months of planning.

"Being an annual event put on by the 30th FSS, the activities are coordinated and manned by the base's outdoor recreation, library, fitness center and other base organizations," Mr. Hayes said. "The majority of volunteers are 30th FSS employees. The cooking will be done by Non-Commissioned Officer Association volunteers. All facilities work together to ensure this is a quality event for the people of Vandenberg."

Food will be served between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The menu will include hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, soda and water.

In past years, the Independence Day picnic has attracted large crowds (1,000 to 1,500 people) from the Vandenberg community.

"We want everyone to come out and have some good food, a fun time and most importantly, enjoy a safe 4th of July event," said Mr. Hayes.

Event coordinators are still seeking volunteers to help with picnic set-up and tear down; games; face painting; food service; trash; and two bounce house monitors.
