The Vandenberg Fire Department will host its annual Kids Fire Camp from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 13 at Fire Station 2 (Building 10660).

The Vandenberg Chapel is co-sponsoring the event.

There are only 50 slots available for children, 8 to 12 years old, of military, DOD civilians and contractors.

"Children are 20% of our population and 100% of our future... nothing is more important than training and educating them to become safer, smarter and better citizens," said Mr. Mark Farias, Fire Chief with the Vandenberg Fire Department.

The day will include a station tour, showing the children where and how firefighters live during their 24-hour shifts; a chance to extinguish a small fire with a fire extinguisher; a chance to learn how to identify and report common fire safety hazards around the house which will prevent fires, learn the importance of using 911, stop drop and roll and how to escape a smoke filled house; an obstacle course that gives children a chance to use some of the many firefighting tools and finally a chance to burn off any remaining energy by playing in the Fire Engine Bounce House.

Parents are highly encouraged to share the day with their son or daughter. This is a great opportunity for family members to bond and learn fire safety together.

Parents can sign up their children at the Fire Prevention Office in Fire Station 2 Building 10660, or by calling 606-4680. The deadline for signing up for the event is 3 p.m. on Friday July 29, 2011. Lunch consisting of a Hot Dog, chips and a drink will be provided to the children at no cost.
