Manzanita teacher earns Crystal Apple award

VANDENBERG AIR FORCEBASE, Calif. -- A kindergarten teacher at Vandenberg's Manzanita Charter School, Located in the former east housing area here, was honored this month with the Crystal Apple award in the North County Elementary Education category by the Teachers Network of Santa Barbara County .

The Manzanita Charter School Kindergarten teacher and Lompoc native, Jenny Klinedinst, is the first staff member in the school's short three years to win this award.

"I appreciate the flexibility here," said Ms. Klinedinst. "I'm allowed to meet the children's needs at their own level."

About 27 percent of the children that attend Manzanita Charter School come directly from Vandenberg's population.

"This award is for all of us, and it shows Manzanita is really meeting our children's needs," Ms. Klinedinst said. "This award is a shock I never expected."

Crystal Apple awards are given annually to educators in Santa Barbara County who are nominated by their peers. For educators, the reward for a job well-done is seeing the many successes of their students. The Crystal Apple award is one way the community can thank and recognize educators for their many hours in the class room.

The award winners will be honored by the Teachers Network of the Santa Barbara County Education Office on May 19 at the annual Education Celebration in Buellton.
