Working aggressively Thursday and today, fire crews have established a barrier around the Bear Creek Fire using a combination of roads, fire breaks and back burns, according to 30th Space Wing emergency operations personnel.

"We are optimistic that we will be close to full containment by the end of the day," said Dan Ardoin, Vandenberg Fire Department operations division chief. "Cooperation from our local communities has been nothing less than outstanding--it's made all the difference."

An arcing power line has been identified as the cause of the fire, which began on south base Thursday. The fire has spread through approximately 700 acres and is now 50 percent contained.

The wind has been favorable for fighting the fire today, said base officials. No structures are threatened.

Vandenberg Fire Department and supporting emergency responders resumed work to extinguish the fire at 9 a.m. today. Some of the crews have since been released.
