CES to host Earth Day event

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- The 30th Civil Engineer Squadron here is scheduled to host the tenth annual Vandenberg Earth Day at the base library here April 28.

The event is set to take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will feature interactive displays from base-wide units as well as local community organizations.

"The organizations will be promoting pollution prevention messages and providing waste reduction tips," said Kim Turner, a contractor for Tetra Tech and one of the event planners. "Attendees can expect to gain insight to help them become better environmental stewards."

The 30th CES activities council will serve hot dogs, hamburgers, chips and drinks for $5 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The council will also provide activities such as a rock climbing wall and obstacle course in an effort to draw in a younger crowd.

"We find that the children are the ones that really grasp the environmental ideas because they don't have the ingrained habits like adults do," said Dayle Russell, an environmental protection specialist from the 30th CES. "The kids end up prompting their parents to be more earth-friendly."

Earth Day has been an official event recognized by the U.S. for forty years and the 30th CES has taken it upon themselves to organize this event for ten consecutive years. In past years, the event has drawn in around 400 people, said Ms. Turner. This year the 30th CES hopes to bring in more than 500.

"While conscientious environmental use is everyone's responsibility, the 30th CES is charged with the oversight of installation environmental programs, to include education and outreach," said Lt. Col. Timothy Dodge, the commander for the 30th CES. "Earth Day is a tremendous opportunity for CE's professionals, who are passionate about their role in the wing's mission, to make a real impact in the daily lives for those who work, play and live in the Vandenberg community."
