RANDOLPH AIR FORCE BASE, Texas (AFNS) -- An Air Force commercial highlighting the role men and women in the Air Force's Joint Space Operations Center at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif., play in protecting satellite and other space assets begins airing Aug. 31 in television markets and select movie theaters across the country.

"Space Command" shows what happens when two pieces of space junk collide, sending debris on a potentially cataclysmic collision course with a vital communications satellite.

The commercial is the second in a series of three; the first was released June 29 and highlights the technology of unmanned aircraft systems.

"Space operations are a huge part of our Air Force and imperative to the daily success of our warriors in blue," said Col. Michael Tillema, director of strategic communications for Air Force Recruiting Service. "I am excited. I feel this new commercial will help inform the American public about this vital mission and showcase our high-tech careers to potential recruits."

"Space Command" was produced by contract ad agency GSD&M Idea City of Austin, Texas, for AFRS. The 30-second spot will air on the Adult Swim, BET, Comedy Central, ESPN, ESPNews, FX, FOX Soccer, G4, MTV, NFL, Speed, Spike TV, TBS, USA and History channels.

A third commercial featuring the Air Force's elite combat, search and rescue Airmen is currently in production.

The Air Force's new Sci-Fi campaign is geared towards demonstrating that technology, once thought to be science fiction, is actually being employed by the Air Force today. Each commercial spot is portrayed in a cinematic, sci-fi environment and then reveals in the end that these missions are not science fiction, but rather what the men and women in the Air Force do every day.
