Wing safety changes motorcycle safety course sign-up procedures
VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- Starting Oct. 1, all military and Department of Defense civilians interested in attending motorcycle training must directly contact Central Coast Motorcycle Training to register.
CCMT is a Motorcycle Safety Foundation approved motorcycle training school that provides both basic and experienced riding courses, which are offered in both Santa Maria and Paso Robles.
Until recently, Team V members were able to enroll for these classes through the 30th Space Wing safety office, which paid for the course. Unfortunately, last minute cancellations and no-shows meant the wing was paying for empty seats.
"It was easy to enroll and just as easy to reschedule or withdraw from the class," said Brian Eiler, 30th SW ground safety manager. "The issue is that we have basically wasted $12,225 in training funds. That is 50 basic motorcycle training slots."
In order to stop losing money and ensure only those people who are truly serious about taking the class sign up, people will have to enroll themselves in the class. This also means the prospective students will have to pay upfront for the course: $150 for students under 21 years old, $250 for students over 21. Riders are reimbursed for the fee upon completion of the course.
The new enrollment procedures should do three positive things, Mr. Eiler said. First, it will decrease the number of personnel signing up just to take the course. Second, it will provide more opportunities for those that own or plan to own motorcycles. Lastly, it will save the 30th SW approximately $4000 per year in training funds.
For more information on signing up for the course or on motorcycle safety in general, contact a unit safety representative or the 30th SW ground safety office at 606-8804.
