U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Preston Rice, 30th Security Forces Squadron patrolman, fires an M4A1 Carbine from the prone supported firing position during a Combat Arms Training and Maintenance course at Vandenberg Space Force Base, Calif., Jan. 20, 2026. During CATM, personnel practice shooting the M4A1 in the standing, kneeling and prone firing positions.

CATM instructors provide weapons safety, maintenance, and proficiency training to develop mission-ready Airmen and Guardians.

Security Forces members complete CATM on an annual basis at minimum, ensuring Airmen and Guardians lethality and readiness remains sharp.
