Key Spouses: Kathryn Frailie - 30th CES
VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- Team Vandenberg honors Key Spouses for their continuous service and dedication to military members and their families.
Q: Where are you from?
A: I am from Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Q: How long have you been serving the military as a spouse?
A: It will be 13 years this summer.
Q: What made you want to be a part of the Key Spouse program?
A: My husband is Lt. Col. Deron Frailie, 30th Civil Engineer Squadron commander. To help out with the squadron, I went through the key spouse training program to be a mentor. That way I'll be able to keep in touch with the squadron and help spouses have a better idea of what's going on. As the 30th CES is split up into different sections, our general hurdle is connecting and keeping up with 300 military spouses within the squadron.
Q: Why is your job important?
A: I think it's helpful that I'm helping my husband keep tabs on what's going on. With the 30th CES's deployment rates, I help out with spouses who have deployed family members.
Q: Why is the Key Spouse program important?
A: I think it's important because this is a very large base. There are plenty of families that live in the surrounding area, and I think the program is one way that helps provide support and continuity. Sometimes it's easier to talk to someone when you're dropping your kids off to school or at the commissary than it is approaching the commander. Sometimes it's a little easier to approach another spouse if you have questions or something you need help with.
Q: How does it feel to give back to the community on a regular basis?
A: I enjoy that. I'm a people person so I care very much about people. Sometimes I wish I could do more but I like being able to do the little bit I can with the squadron. We care about the people in our squadron and their families. Caring for families is essential for ensuring members are doing well. If there are problems at home, they are not able to focus on the mission.
Q: Key spouses tip of the week?
A: You need to find joy and happiness wherever you are. Some of the places that I thought I would like the least--I liked the most. Make the best of where you're at.
