VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- At approximately 12:00 p.m., a small brush fire was reported in the vicinity of Corral Road, northeast of the Vandenberg Air Force Base Utah Gate. The fire affected approximately four acres and is now under control. Residential areas of the base were never in danger.
Because fire crews are working near high voltage equipment, a significant portion of the base power system was intentionally de-energized. Power has since been restored.
Officials at Crestview Elementary School, acting out of an abundance of caution, elected to evacuate. Students were relocated to Cabrillo High School and parents have been notified by school officials to pick up their children.
Due to the power outage and the high temperatures, the Youth Center and CDC could not continue normal operations. The School Age Care Program at the Youth Center will be closed for the remainder of the day. The Youth Center will not be able to pick up children from Cabrillo High School.
Additionally, classroom temperatures have exceeded acceptable limits at the Child Development Center (CDC). Parents of children at the CDC are asked to pick up their children as soon as possible.
