Eat right and have fun in February

Even though we should all be watching what we eat all throughout the year, February has been designated as "Nutrition Month."

As such, I encourage personnel to evaluate their diet and seek guidance from the many sources available, to include: the Health and Wellness Center, various reputable Web sites, numerous books at the Vandenberg Library and even Healthy Palate inside the new Vandenberg Fitness Center.

Most of the dining options on base offer healthy choices on their menus, but we all know how easy it is to select a meal based on taste and, sometimes, convenience. The best advice I received was to practice moderation and balance. It's important to "reward yourself" with a treat sometimes, but be sure you are incorporating all of your nutritional needs first. Take advantage of the wonderful healthy food you can find, whether you are visiting the Breakers Dining Facility or the Pacific Coast Club, and if you have ideas for healthy items you would like to see on the menus, fill out a comment card or submit an "ICE" feedback online at www.30FSS.com.

Now that I have reminded you about the importance of nutrition, I must remind you of another significant observance in February. The focus for the month of February, within the Year of the Air Force Family, is on our single Airmen. Our single Airmen are critical to the total Air Force family, but are often excluded from programs and events geared toward "couples" or families. This month we are given a chance to highlight the things our single Airmen may not even know about. Too many times, our single Airmen do not even realize how much help and programming is available to them.

One of the reasons the name was changed across the Air Force from the "Family Support Center" to the "Airman and Family Readiness Center" was to highlight and remind our Airmen that the A&FRC is a valuable resource for single Airmen, too. From sponsorship training to finances, from deployments to relocations to transitions out of the service, the A&FRC provides you the tools and the support network you need to succeed, whether you are single or not.
