The month of December brings with it a time of merriment, the giving of gifts and peace on earth. December is also the time of year for squadron Christmas...Oops! Holiday Parties.

Some people perceive replacing the term "Christmas" with "Holidays" as an attack on their religious beliefs or a form of censorship meant to stifle the Christian community. An understanding of the "Why" of the term "Holidays" is the starting point for appreciating its use.

The use of holiday is encouraged in the work environment because the work environment is comprised of individuals from different cultures and perspectives. In order to promote an environment in which civilian and military members view their culture or perspective as appreciated and recognized, leadership should make every effort to ensure their respective work environments reflect an atmosphere of inclusion.

Generally, when employees feel appreciated and recognized they are more productive; which translates into mission accomplishments. It is in the context of mission accomplishments (getting the job done) that "Holidays" instead of "Christmas" should be used. Decorations situated in public areas (i.e. break rooms, waiting areas, outside of buildings and etc.) should reflect not only Christmas symbols but other symbols representing observances and beliefs occurring in December, and in certain instances, January.

So, again, why holiday instead of Christmas? By not using "Holidays", in the context of promoting an inclusive work environment, it could possibly impact the effectiveness of an organization by inadvertently communicating to employees and co-workers their culture; race, belief or non-belief is not recognized or appreciated.
