Labor Day is upon us again! Published Sept. 3, 2009 By Lt. Col. Jason Bush 30th Force Support Squadron commander VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- Are you ready for the weekend? The long Labor Day weekend is already upon us! Signs indicating the end of summer are beginning to appear. The days are getting shorter; the beginning of the NFL season is just days away and our kids are already back in school. This Labor Day makes us reflect on everything we've done so far this year, and what we have yet to accomplish. Labor Day, always the first Monday in September, was derived from the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of America's working class. It's our nation's tribute to the contribution workers have made to the strength, prosperity and well-being of our country. And, in most geographical locations, Labor Day is typically the last weekend of nice weather which culminates the summer. Labor Day weekend also marks the end of the 101 Critical Days of Summer, a period historically associated with increased mishaps. Bear in mind, we must always exercise safety and continuously manage risk. A lot of folks try to squeeze many last minute summer activities into one weekend. As you prepare to celebrate Labor Day weekend with friends and family, keep safety in mind. Don't drink and drive, and don't allow friends to do so either. Some members of the Vandenberg community are planning extended trips over the long weekend. We urge you to take some simple precautions: -- Plan enough time for the trip and don't speed. -- Watch out for aggressive drivers. There will be plenty of traffic on the roads. -- Make sure to get plenty of rest and avoid becoming fatigued. -- Let someone know where you are going and what your timetable is. -- Make sure your vehicle is in good shape before your departure. -- Always wear your seat belt. A simple method to remain safety conscious this Labor Day weekend is to remember the acronym "ACT": 1) Assess the situation, 2) Consider the options and, 3) Take responsible and appropriate action. Those who remain in town should remember to avoid taking unnecessary risks when enjoying recreational activities. We are fortunate to live and work in the Central California Coast area with all there is to do and see. Right here at Vandenberg, we have great activities for you to enjoy your weekend -- have a "stay-cation" and save on your travel woes, risks and costs! Head out to Marshallia Ranch for a round of golf or stop by Surf Lanes to attempt a perfect game! Outdoor Recreation and Information, Tickets and Tours can assist with theme park tickets or local trips and tours. Need to work on your car? Then head over to our Auto Hobby to complete that end-of-summer project. Or, practice up on your marksmanship skills with a visit to the Rod and Gun Club overlooking the blue Pacific Ocean. The opportunities are endless and you need only to get out and try them. So, over this Labor Day weekend take a well deserved break, enjoy family and friends and recharge for the challenges ahead ... you deserve it!
