Eyes of the eagle Published Feb. 19, 2009 By Jean-Pierre Lapre 30th Space Wing Office of Special Investigation Detachment 804 VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- The men and women of AFOSI Detachment 804 are committed to protecting Vandenberg AFB from felony-level crimes that adversely impact good order and discipline as well as Air Force resources and people. Our mission is to identify, exploit and neutralize criminal, terrorist and intelligence threats to the U.S. Air Force, Department of Defense and U.S. Government. Unquestionably, crime undermines the effectiveness of the space mission here. As a result, AFOSI agents seek base populace support of the AFOSI mission. All base affiliates, regardless of military status (i.e., dependents, retirees or civilians) are highly encouraged to report crime or suspicious activity to AFOSI Detachment 804. Often times, crimes go unreported because a person who has knowledge of or witnesses a crime believes it does not warrant OSI's involvement. Crime is everyone's problem. Crime impacts us all and, as members of the armed forces, it is our obligation to report all criminal activity. Below are the answers to some frequently asked questions: Q: What crimes does AFOSI investigate? A: AFOSI investigates a wide variety of serious offenses-espionage, terrorism, crimes against property, violence against people, larceny, computer hacking, acquisition fraud, drug use and distribution, financial misdeeds, military desertion, corruption of the contracting process, and any other illegal activity that undermines the mission of the U.S. Air Force or the DoD. Q: Can I remain anonymous when I report a crime? A: Yes. AFOSI Det. 804 established a phone line specifically for that purpose. The number is (805) 734-3466. Anyone at anytime can call and leave a message anonymously. Alternatively, if someone wishes to personally speak with an AFOSI Agent, he/she can call 805-606-1852. Q: If I witness a crime or suspect criminal activity after duty hours, how can I reach an Agent? A: Call the 30 SFS Law Enforcement Desk at 606-3911 and have them refer you to the on-call agent. You can do this 24/7. Q: What should I do if I'm uncertain if a crime has occurred and just heard a rumor? A: Rumors are still encouraged to be reported to OSI. A small rumor could turn into a case that protects hundreds of people or millions of U.S. Government dollars. Q: If the incident isn't criminal in nature, but suspicious, such as people asking me odd questions or people taking photographs in unusual place, what should I do? A: Contact AFOSI immediately or, if after duty hours, the LE desk. The Eagle Eyes program is an Air Force anti-terrorism initiative that enlists the eyes and ears of Air Force members and citizens in the war on terror. Eagle Eyes teaches people about the typical activities terrorists engage in to plan their attacks. Armed with this information, anyone can recognize elements of potential terror planning when they see it. The program provides a network of local, 24-hour phone numbers to call whenever a suspicious activity is observed. You and your family are encouraged to learn the categories of suspicious behavior and stay attuned to your surroundings Q: I witnessed a crime take place off-base involving military members, should I contact OSI or the local police? A: If it is truly an emergency, contact the local police department at 9-1-1 first. Follow-up with AFOSI after the phone call. Bottom line is, if you see or have knowledge of a crime contact AFOSI-we are here for you.
