Airman’s attic available to help E-5 and below Published Oct. 7, 2008 By Airman 1st Class Wesley Carter VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- As gas prices continue to soar, prices of everyday merchandise rise as well. This is a truth that all members of the community feel, including Airmen. The Airmen that might feel it the worst are those at the bottom of the food-chain. However, some of them might not know that basic housing merchandise is available for free at the Vandenberg Airman's attic. "The Airman's Attic is available for Airmen, E-5 and below, who are just starting out or are in the middle of a move and are in need of basic needs like a couch or a dresser," said Emma Thompson, manager of the Airman's Attic. The attic specializes in items that are used to start a home, like living room furniture, car seats, baby clothes, bookshelves and much more at no cost, she said. Not only are the items free, but they are easier to obtain today than ever before. "In the past there was a lot of red-tape and paperwork to be able to shop at the attic," Mrs. Thompson said. "You had to go through your first sergeant, and it was embarrassing. Today that's not the case." There is no paperwork and no hassle. All a staff sergeant or below has to do is visit the store. This type of service to the youngest men and women in the Air Force is not self supported - donations are necessary. "We welcome any donation with a couple of requests," Mrs. Thompson said. "First we ask that whatever is donated to be in good shape - it's not helpful if we give an Airman something that is not going to last. Second we ask that nobody drops items off in front of our store unless we are there to receive it." The attic offers other volunteer opportunities as well. People can work at the attic while it is open, or they can offer to go to houses and pick up items to be donated, Mrs. Thompson said. "I know that if I have something to donate, I don't have a truck," Mrs. Thompson said. "This could become a deterrent for those wanting to donate. If we could get people to donate their time, and their trucks, we could alleviate this problem." If anyone wants more information on volunteering or donating goods call 606-5484. The attic is open Monday and Wednesday and the first and third Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
