Americans celebrate recovery in September Published Sept. 9, 2008 By Staff Report VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- On Aug. 27, President George W. Bush proclaimed September 2008 as National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month in which he calls upon the people of the United States to observe this month with the appropriate programs, ceremonies and activities. Join the Voices for Recovery: Real People, Real Recovery, the 2008 theme, is the unifying force behind the entire 2008 Recovery Month campaign. National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month offers the opportunity to celebrate those in long-term recovery and encourage others to seek treatment. "This month showcases the empowerment, motivation and renewal on the outlook of life," said Dani Grant, Drug Demand Reduction program manager. "Educating community members about substance use disorders, the effectiveness of treatment and the realistic possibility of recovery are key, as well as treating substance use disorders as they are - chronic diseases." While emphasizing the value that treatment of substance use disorders has on individuals, their families, and the community, the campaign encourages people to share their stories and sanctions others to take the necessary steps toward recovery. Around the country and at home, thousands are participating and sponsoring events that center on this year's theme, "Join the Voices for Recovery: Real People, Real Recovery." In Santa Maria, Good Samaritan Services Inc. is holding their 2nd Annual Recovery Celebration on 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 27 at 401 W. Morrison Ave. There will be food, a bounce house, information booths and live music by the Set Free Band. "Please join us to celebrate those who are living a drug and alcohol free life and support and encourage those who are working towards their own success," Ms. Grant said.
