Pillar Point supports 2013 Mavericks Invitational
HALF MOON BAY, Calif. – Peter Mel, Santa Cruz professional surfer, hugs his surfboard during the 2013 Mavericks Invitational just north of Half Moon Bay here Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013. Mavericks are waves that can crest up to 50 feet with tremendously strong currents, dangerous rocks and shallow reefs coupled with frigid water temperatures, which attract attention from surfers world-wide. Peter Mel would eventually go on to win the Invitational, at the age of 43, after tackling the biggest wave ever ridden on the West Coast in 1999. (U.S. Air Force photo/Senior Airman Lael Huss)
