Spreading peace in local communities
Steven Heuring, 30th Space Wing Public Affairs visual information specialist, was recognized for his nomination of the sixth Valley of the Flowers Peace Prize Award, Jan. 31, 2016, Lompoc, Calif. The Peace Prize was commissioned by the Valley of the Flowers Church of Christ in 2010, to honor individuals who further peace and reconciliation in Lompoc. Heuring was one of 10 nominees honored at the award ceremony Sunday, for his dedication to his community. As the president of the Vandenberg Village Association and a civilian employee at Vandenberg Air Force Base, he has participated in community projects that have led to better communication and understanding among residents. In August 2015, he organized a public panel discussion attended by various county agencies. By bringing these agencies together, a better understanding for the concerns of the community was reached. Additionally, Heuring spearheaded the 30th SW “Computers for Learning” program. His participation in this initiative has given local schools government computer equipment, providing computer access for teachers and children in the community.
