Vandenberg Partners with Local Conservation Teams, Releases Pigeon Guillemots on Base
A juvenile Pigeon Guillemot takes flight after rehabilitation and was released at Vandenberg Space Force Base, Calif., Aug. 6, 2025. Vandenberg SFB’s environmental team works closely with conservation partners like Point Blue Conservation Science, to monitor seabird populations annually. This data informs ecosystem management and supports conservation of both common and special status species. The Department of the Air Force has been monitoring special status plant and wildlife species at Vandenberg for several decades with launch-specific monitoring occurring since the early 1980’s. Vandenberg has a dedicated environmental team of more than 40 personnel continuing that monitoring process and surveying natural resource resilience.
