U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Trey Nelson, a 30th Security Forces Squadron military dog trainer, reenlists with his military working dog, Axel, by his side at Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany, April 4, 2024. Axel retired on July 25, 2025, after an exceptional career with the 52nd Security Forces Squadron at Spangdahlem, where he served for eight years. Nelson, Axel’s seventh handler, adopted him following his retirement, ensuring the transition from a life of discipline to one of relaxation and companionship. In retirement, military working dogs like Axel enjoy leisurely walks, playtime, and affection, while receiving specialized care to meet their aging needs. For Axel, retirement is more than a time to rest—it’s an opportunity to embrace the peace he spent his career protecting. (Courtesy photo)
