Retired Air Force Maj. Gen. Ed Thomas, chief executive officer of the Air and Space Forces Aid Society, met with Military and Family Readiness staff during a visit to Vandenberg Space Force Base, Calif., May 7, 2026. Thomas and his team collaborated with base specialists to highlight the society’s portfolio of emergency financial assistance, education grants and community programs, including childcare support for families during permanent change of station moves. As the official charity of the Department of the Air Force, AFAS provided nearly $12 million in support to more than 13,000 service members last year. The organization’s primary challenge remains ensuring that Guardians and Airmen know the safety net exists before a crisis hits. (U.S. Space Force Photo by Airman Enso Valle)
