Retired Air Force Maj. Gen. Ed Thomas, Air and Space Forces Aid Society chief executive officer, highlights relief grants designed to support military families during financial hardships to Key Support Liaisons during a visit at Vandenberg Space Force Base, Calif., May 7, 2026. Thomas detailed how the organization provides interest-free loans to assist during extraordinary circumstances, including permanent change of station moves and severe accidents. Operating as the official charity of the Department of the Air Force, AFAS provided nearly $12 million in support to more than 13,000 service members across the enterprise last year. Yet, their biggest challenge remains ensuring that young Airmen and Guardians know this safety net exists before a crisis hits. (U.S. Space Force Photo by Airman Enso Valle)
