An Airman assigned to the 30th Civil Engineer Squadron's Explosive Ordnance Disposal Flight here was killed in action and another was injured Tuesday, Oct. 5, while serving in Afghanistan.

Senior Airman Daniel Johnson, 23, died while conducting an EOD operation in Afghanistan; Tech. Sgt. Robert Butler was injured.

"Our hearts and prayers go out to the families of Airman Johnson and Sergeant Butler during this extremely difficult time," said Col. Richard Boltz, 30th Space Wing commander. "The loss of one of our own deeply affects us all; Team Vandenberg is pulling together closely to be there for the Johnson and Butler families and for each other."

Airman Johnson and Sergeant Butler were conducting explosive ordnance disposal operations in an area west of Kandahar, Afghanistan, when an improvised explosive device detonated. Airman Johnson was transported to a hospital at Kandahar Air Base, and it was soon thereafter that he was pronounced dead.

Memorial service planning is underway. More information will be released as it becomes available.
