Media representatives are invited to view the Air Force's first Delta IV Heavy rocket to launch from Space Launch Complex-6 here during a media day scheduled for Feb. 23 at 11 a.m. PST.

The event is an opportunity to video and photograph the rocket, launch pad and interview key officials involved in the first Delta IV Heavy west coast launch.

The Delta IV Heavy will be the most powerful rocket ever launched from Vandenberg AFB. Areas briefed and highlighted include refurbishment work to SLC-6 and the Delta IV Heavy preparation in anticipation of the scheduled December 2010 launch.

The Delta IV Heavy is built on a heritage of sequential enhancements to the Delta I, II and III family of vehicles and was developed in partnership with the U.S. Air Force Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle program. The Delta IV provides a single system that can accommodate medium-lift to heavy-lift missions for U.S. government or commercial launches. The inaugural Delta IV Heavy launch occurred Dec. 21, 2004, and two subsequent successful Delta IV Heavy missions occurred from SLC-37 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla.

Note to Editors:

Media are asked to arrive Feb. 23 at 10:30 a.m. PST at the VAFB South Base gate located on Ocean Blvd., for accreditation and security check. (Note: this is not the "Santa Maria" main gate used as the media meet point to view launches) From the gate, all media will be transported by bus to SLC-6 due to parking limitations. Since this is an operational area, all media must wear slacks, closed toed shoes, socks and shirts with sleeves. Including briefings, tour and travel time, the media day will last approximately three hours.

Media are asked to RSVP for the event by Feb. 22 at 2 p.m. PST, by calling 805-606-6159 or 805-606-5056 at the 30th Space Wing Public Affairs Office. For more information about the event, media may also contact ULA Communications Manager Michael Rein at 321-693-6250 or
