Firefighters push back Pine Canyon blaze Published Oct. 15, 2009 By 031009 VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- Emergency responders made progress overnight containing the fire that started near Vandenberg Middle School here Wednesday at approximately 11:45 a.m. Currently, the fire is 95 percent contained and approximately 600 acres have burned. Weather overnight was cooperative to fire crews as calm winds and cool moist air settled over the base and remained through the morning. Fire crews today are working to isolate and extinguish any remaining hot spots throughout the Pine Canyon region as they pose the risk for potential flare ups. Fire officials are now optimistic they will have the last of the fire contained by the end of the day. There are no reported injuries or damaged facilities on base. Vandenberg officials have resumed normal operations on base, however, they remind base residents to limit outdoor exposure due to poor air quality and ask that people not involved in fire response avoid fire related areas.
