Polish President Lech Kaczynski is set to visit Vandenberg AFB, Calif., on Tuesday to tour U.S. missile defense facilities located on the base and meet with U.S. Missile Defense Agency officials.

President Kaczynski is set to make a media statement at Vandenberg AFB at approximately 6:30 p.m. on July 17. News media wishing to attend should contact Vandenberg AFB Public Affairs at (805) 606-3595 for information about access requirements.

The United States has proposed locating ten long-range interceptor missiles in Poland and an advanced radar in the Czech Republic. The system is designed to defend Europe and provide additional protection to the United States from long-range missiles launched from rouge regimes that would use a missile to achieve political objectives or create unrest. Vandenberg AFB currently has two operational long-range interceptor missiles and advanced communications equipment that is integrated with the Ballistic Missile Defense System, which includes additional long-range interceptor missiles based in Alaska, several radars and other sensors and an integrated command and control network to provide defense of the United States against a limited long-range ballistic missile attack.

EDITORS' NOTE: Media desiring to cover the president's press conference and departure from Vandenberg should contact Tech. Sgt. Neil Spann at (805) 606-3595 and be at the Vandenberg Main Gate no later than 5 p.m. Tuesday. All media must be self contained; no external power will be available at the press conference site. Satellite vehicles will be allowed and teams should notify public affairs if you plan to bring a truck for live coverage. Due to the level of security, all members will be required to carry a photo id; media affiliation must be available and ALL equipment will be inspected by security officials prior to accessing the base. Media will convoy to the conference site and will leave Vandenberg main gate no later then 5:30 p.m. Media RSVPing will be called with changes to the president's agenda.
