A team of 18 Hotshots worked on the controlled burn of grassland and coastal sage at Purisma Point Beach. The goal of this one-day burn was to increase the habitat for the Western Snowy Plover by re-contouring the sand dunes for more suitable nesting conditions while also reducing the risk of wildfire. Vandenberg Hotshots cut a line during a controlled fire Sept. 18, 2019 at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif. Hotshots are an elite small crew of wildland firefighters who have been trained to deal with fires in remote regions where other support is unavailable to assist.
